How To Choose Motorcycle Boots

When you first start riding a motorcycle, you might find that your feet don't grip the sides of the bike as well as you might like. This can be a dangerous situation while you are riding because it can result in you not being able to maintain proper control of the motorcycle. In order to increase the chances that you are successful while riding, follow these tips for choosing motorcycle boots.

1. Look for Boots That Can Retain Laces

The most common mistake that's made is that a person purchases a pair of boots that he or she thinks would be appropriate for motorcycling, only to find that the laces get caught in the wheels. In order to make sure that you don't run into this issue, look for boots that are specifically designed to keep their laces under control. Some boots will have a small pouch where you put the ends of the laces and then close in order to make sure that the laces do not slip out. Another method of lace retention is that the unused laces retract back into the boot. Finally, some boots don't have laces at all and instead have high quality Velcro that keeps the boots on the rider's feet.

2. Look for Higher Boots

In order to get the maximum amount of protection from your boots, you are going to want to make sure that they cover at least the ankle when you put them on. Motorcycle boots are stiffer than normal shoes or work boots. This stiffness is intentional because it help the person wearing the boots not suffer a broken ankle or other injury should he or she get into a crash.

3. Only Buy Treated Leather

You want to make sure that your boots repel water, rather than absorb it in order to make sure that you are able to stay comfortable during wet rides. One way to make sure that you don't get wet feet is to only buy leather boots that have been treated with a waterproof coating.

4. Look for Nonslip Surfaces

Finally, make sure that the boots you buy are rough on the bottoms and the sides. This roughness will decrease the chances that the boots will slip away from the motorcycle while you are riding it, even if it is raining. You want to make sure that you find boots that are specifically labeled to be "non-slip."
